The story centers around a mysterious town in South Korea that had been destroyed by ghosts or phantoms over a decade ago. The survivors of the attack mostly live there, any who leave die mysteriously, in circumstances similar to those who died during the attack. Living in the town is a mysterious high school boy, Eun Sung-min, with amnesia, and his maid, Maid. He apparently has powers to fight the phantoms, and she appears to have no name, but is highly protective of him. A government agency thinks the disaster will reoccur soon, and has shown up to fight it. Similar events have happened all over the world, but since that incident in the town, the mysterious team that first fought the occurrances have disappeared. Subsequent attempts have been much less successful, as all people infected by the fear must be now killed to stop the occurrances. Several survivors of the town have been found to have the ability to fight phantoms without necessarily killing the infected. The agency suspects the boy has special abilities and is suspicious of a maid bearing no name except her title.
ReBirth - The Lunatic Taker is about a world where Angels (Tenshi, female seraph like beings) eat the souls of humans in an interval (interstitial time moments). Those who souls are eaten generally commit suicide a few days later, for no known reason (Kirkegaard suicides). If however they pick up sorcery devices, they may make a contract to become Takers. The sorcery devices then become weapons of battle, and transform from jewelry to weaponry in battle. They suddenly have countdown tattos in the middle of their collar, which counts down 1 each day. When it comes to zero, they evaporate from the world. To extend their lives, they can steal lifepoints from other takers, or from Angels, by killing them. When battling Angels, they reveal their true monstrous forms. By accumulating life points, special powers are revealed, some of which burn lifepoints to use.

He joins a school for SAI:takers pretending to be one of them to gain life points to live. The manga follows his life at school.
